The message is a simple one . . . . . "Don't Breed and Buy When Others Die"

Staffords and Stafford crosses were being destroyed every week, their breed costing them their lives. But not many "non rescue" people are aware of the current plight of Stafford crosses.
The full Staffords have breed rescue championing their case but are unable to help with the cross breeds.

We hope to try and change that.

The aims of staffycross.org

We are a group of dog lovers and rescue workers who are concerned over the large number of Staffy crosses in rescues and pounds up and down the country. For many in the dog pounds they will see out their seven days only to be put to sleep. The ones that are lucky enough to have a rescue space then require the right home which can take much longer to find than a home for many other breeds.

Many people, through no fault of their own are unaware of the seriousness of the Staffy cross plight. We aim to show why numbers are at breaking point and how ensuring your dog is neutered will help save lives. I know where I live, pounds are few and far between and many people believe this to be the case throughout the UK. We will show that this, unfortunately, is not the case.

We intend to show people that Stafford types are not "devil dogs" but in fact ideal family pets with a great love of people. By publicising those in rescue we hope many can find their ideal home with ease. We will also include those dogs in desperate need of rescue placements in the hope that some lives can be saved.

We hope to offer help with regards to "all things staffy!" From basic care and training to more serious issues, in the hope fewer staffy types arrive in rescue. Many owners are not unsuitable owners just unaware of many things that some people take for granted. There's nothing to be ashamed of in asking for help, but there is in dumping a dog.

We aim to compile figures of actual numbers in rescues and pounds in order to see the full extent of the problem. Once we have full figures we hope to encourage the government to take a more active step to helping these animals.

We also hope to help raise much needed funds for those rescues who take in Stafford types, many of whom are ill, beaten or in need of general medical attention.

We hope, with the use of our posters and email newsletter, to see more supporters offering help.

I have been asked why I would like to see less of these dogs bred if I care for them so much.
The answer is simple. I want these dogs to have a life, not merely exist for a time then to die at the hands of a stranger. These dogs deserve more than that.

That is our final and most important aim.

Rescuing Dogs From Death Row...To Find Loving Homes.

Rochdale Dog Rescue work every week to find responsible rescue places for dogs in a Northern Pound in the UK that are due to be put to sleep if not claimed after 7 days. The pound that we work with are one of the few pounds out there that are willing to work closely with us as a rescue. They too work hard to save these dogs being put to sleep by providing Rochdale Dog Rescue with photographs, information about the dogs and constant updates.

Few people realise that many healthy dogs, through no fault of their own, are being destroyed if not claimed within the week.

The pound dogs come in all shapes and sizes, ages and breeds. Some dogs are abandoned pets that once belonged to somebody or a family, some are strays and some are simply signed over to the pound by their owner.

The only certainty for these dogs is that they need our help!

We work hard each week at Rochdale Dog Rescue to find placements for these dogs whose lives are literally in our hands.

Transport is requested through volunteer networks on the internet to move dogs to rescues across the country.

Stray pound dogs must serve 7 days in which they may be re-claimed by their owners. Some dogs however are "signed over" by their owner to the pound in which case the dog can then be taken out of the pound at any time within the 7 days by a rescue.

North West Dog Welfare was founded to promote responsible dog ownership by providing help and advice to dog owners throughout the north west of England, and also to assist those dogs that find themselves homeless or in need of care by providing that care before finding them suitable new homes. If you are looking to provide a permanent loving home to a dog please check out our rehoming page, a prehoming form is also downloadable which will give us a better idea as to which of our dogs would be most suitable to your current circumstances.

Homechecks are carried out prior to you being offered a dog, and all of our dogs are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, flea treated and wormed prior to rehoming, a donation is required and is used directly on vets bills. All volunteers at North West Dog Welfare give their time for free and we are a non profit making organisation.

Please look around our website and feel free to sign our guest book we would love to hear from you

Recent events that have seen media coverage are now being used by certain organisations to push forward more legislation for dangerous dogs. Say No to B.S.L aims to show that this is not the answer. Talks of amnesties, firstly covering Merseyside, now stated as being National are being stated as an answer in the immediate term. This is a flawed view.

Those with innocent friendly dogs will not hand the dogs in simply to be destroyed and neither will those who enjoy the status they believe their dog gives them.

Any Amnesty may not run in-line with the 1997 amendment which allows owners whose dogs are seized, to ask the courts to allow their dog to be registered and therefore live. This decision can only be made by a court of law but if your dog is of good nature and you are responsible, is a possibilty. If you sign your dog over under an amnesty you will not get this option.

The Kennel club has opposed any amnesty and instead suggested opening the register of exempt dogs (more info here). While the finer points of this need discussion it PROVES there is another way. In 1991 a law was rushed in because people where scared. That law failed and at a price. Lets not make the same mistake again.

No breed or type of dog is more likely to attack than any other. Lack of proper training and responsibilty by the owner is much more likely to create a dangerous dog.

Unless legislation is followed that deals with the owners who fail to control their dog, regardless of breed, we will never reduce dog attacks. If we, the general public, allow this to continue we may find we are opening up more discussion of adding to the banned breeds. Your breed or type could be next.

Say NO to BSL and Dog Amnesties!!
